Beijing Accelerator was inspired by a visit of the artist to Beijing some years ago. There he encountered the dynamics of a city like Beijing at work, and realized how fast Beijing is transforming into a modernist cityscape. Beijing Accelerator deals with the effects of acceleration on nowadays city live, in that sense it is similar to an earlier work, Panoramic Accelerator, but the Beijing-version has an enhanced cinematographic experience as well as a superior interface that makes the audience experience more intuitive.

The installation plays a game with bodily and visual perception by manipulating both elements according their specific functioning. In Beijing Accelerator the participant sits in a racing-chair on a motorized structure equipped with a joystick. A screen - on which panoramic views of the city of Beijing are projected - is positioned in front of the user and rotates with the speed of the user himself. While rotating he/she controls both the direction and speed of the chair. If the user cannot synchronize the speed of the chair with the moving images his bodily balance system will send different information to the brain than the eyes. This causes an intense feeling of decontrol and can eventually lead to nausea. The aim is to synchronize the moving image with the rotation of the chair. Once this is achieved, the participant is able to view the images properly and without disorientation and nausea. After a short period of time however, a new rotating-panorama appears with a higher pre-set speed. Now it becomes more difficult to obtain the balance in order to cohesively recognize the picture. In total, about six levels need to be accomplished for completion of the experience.
